The Sisyphean is a satirical broadcasting company, composing of a news site, newspaper, a podcast episode, two short documentaries and a special anniversary magazine. All of this material is mean to show how the news makes use of visual elements and language to create an air of legitimacy. This point is given strength by the coverage of all the items talking about pigeon conspiracies and presenting it as real news.
The name of the company is a nod to the Myth of Sisyphus, the story of the mortal who dares to challenge established power structures and is sentenced to push a boulder up a mountain for eternity. Different parts of this myth are represented in every news item in the project.
The website made up the bulk of the project. Through it, the user is drawn into the fake world of our myth. The monthly podcast that starts playing automatically introduces the topic of pigeon conspiracies, which are enhanced when the viewer starts reading the articles. Every article contains hidden messaging connected to the Myth of Sisyphus. The Manifesto in the about page is meant to explain the theoretical framework behind our project and allude to the fact that the viewer is not looking at an ordinary news site.
I'm a graphic designer and aspiring publisher currently based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My main practice focusses on book designs with a conceptual angle, trying to grasp the nature of the book/publication as object, and, increasingly, it's political implications. Materially and thematically, I'm interested in the notion of transparency and reflectivity. These are elements that always come back in my work somehow.
Next to physical, I also work with digital publication methods, in the form of web-develpment.
